Rose Hebert “Monsters in the Closet”

The Strand Center for the Arts is excited to host Rose Hebert’s “Monsters in the Closet” exhibition in the Main Gallery in January, 2017

Rose Hebert is a contemporary folk artist best known for their paintings that drip with vibrant colors. Rose works primarily in acrylics but dabbles in many different media. Their style culminates from years of exploring tattoo art, outsider art, punk music, and the general absurdity of life.

The Strand Center for the Arts is thrilled to host pastel painter Kimberly Provost in the Community Gallery in November, 2016.

Bobby Ziemba

Bobby Ziemba has been photographing his surroundings for half a century, but it wasn’t until he retired as a forest ranger that he returned to school to pursue a degree in the fine art of photography.

Donna Austin’s “Musings of the Lake Champlain Coast”

The Strand Center for the Arts is very excited to host Plattsburgh resident and painter Donna Austin in the Community Gallery in October, 2016.

Throughout her life she has been an educator, silversmith, and painter, working with watercolor, oil, and acrylic paints to create her two dimensional images. 

Ita Bullard

Gharan Burton

The Strand Center for the Arts is thrilled to host painter Gharan Burton in the Main Gallery in August, 2016.

Burton was born and raised on the Caribbean island of Dominica, receiving his college education in painting, sculpture, and metalworking in the United States. Concerning this exhibit, Burton stated that, “The work in this show consists of paintings either done while in the tropics or it is work that was inspired by the island life.” He went on to add that, “My work uses strong colors and the layering of paint to build up textures and desired patterns. My primary painting tool to do this is the palette knife which gives me a more “sculptural” feel in the paint application process.”

The Dark Show

“The Dark Show” is a partnership of three artists: Dan de Moura, Jim "Windsop" Newman, and Louise Patinelli, each of whom possesses a unique style and vision, yet are joined under the common theme, "Dark,” a selection which encompasses anything from the philosophical to the esoteric and the familiar. 

Summer Members Show 2016

Denise and Merrell's Excellent Adventure: Metalwork and Paintings by Merrell and Denise Leavitt

The Strand Center for the Arts is excited to host painter Denise Leavitt and metal sculptor Merrell Leavitt in the Main Gallery in May, 2016, exhibiting “Denise and Merrell's Excellent Adventure: Metalwork and Paintings by Merrell and Denise Leavitt".

“Taken individually, the artwork of either of these incredibly talented people is superb” stated Museum Coordinator, David Monette. “But when you combine that artwork into one show, juxtaposing metal sculptures with these naturalistic paintings, the viewer can really see how they complement one another.”

The Strand Center for the Arts Annual High School & Middle School Exhibition 2016

It’s time for the Strand Center for the Arts' Annual High School & Middle School Exhibition! This year’s exhibition will open on April 1st and run through April 30th 2016.

“imaginations” by Ron Nolland

The Strand Center for the Arts is thrilled to host photographer Ron Nolland, and his guest exhibitors; Kate Catalfamo, Corky Corrado, and Julie Canapa in the Main Gallery in March, 2016. This upcoming exhibit will open in The Strand Center Main Gallery on Friday, March 4 and a free reception will be held from 5:30-7:30 pm that night.

Nolland is a constant exhibitor in The Strand Center “Member Shows” and his work has appeared in all of the center’s Off-Site Galleries. Beyond that, his solo shows at local galleries include such venues as: Clinton Community College, Hale Walter Gallery, The Depot Theater, the Peru Library, and the Stonybrook Gallery, where he was a founding member. His work is also featured at Plattsburgh International Airport and at a large permanent collection at the Inn at Smithfield Best Western. Additionally, Nolland's photography was recently featured in Blueline, an Adirondack literary magazine, and he was an Adirondack Life Photography Contest Award Winner.

Ian Burcroff

Opening Reception: Saturday, February 6 from 5:30-7:30pm

The Strand Center for the Arts is excited to host acrylic painter Ian Burcroff in the Main Gallery in February, 2016. Burcroff was educated at the University of Alaska where he received an MFA in Painting. He went on from there to become Fine Arts Coordinator and Assistant Professor of Art as well as the Humanities Department Chair at Clinton Community College.

Burcroff has had an impressive amount of solo and group shows across the country, including locations such as the Borough Gallery in Burlington, VT, the Bear Gallery in Fairbanks, AK, and Neptune Studios in Utica, NY.

The Aquarelle Artists

The Aquarelle Artists debut at the Strand Center for the Arts in 2016. The Aquarelle Artists are a group of watercolor artists that work and live in the Plattsburgh area and include Michael Brockhues, Donna Austin, Carol Allen, Anne Bailey, Marilyn Kretser, Donald Lafountain, Jessica Mieszkowski and Paula Calkins Lacombe. This upcoming exhibit will open in The Strand Center Community Gallery on Friday, January 8 and a free reception will be held from 5:30-7:30pm that night at 23 Brinkerhoff Street, Plattsburgh. 

“Explorations” by Penelope Clute

The Strand Center for the Arts is excited to host photographer Penelope Clute in the Main Gallery in January, 2016. Penelope, known locally as Penny, has been working with the Plattsburgh community for years, but in law rather than photography. Now in retirement, she has time to focus on exhibiting her amazing collection of photographs and experiences. This upcoming exhibit, titled “Explorations,” will open in The Strand Center Main Gallery on Friday, January 8 and a free reception will be held from 5:30-7:30 pm that night; from 6:00-6:30, Penny will present her “moving picture” show “Cuba on the Cusp!”

Veterans Project 2015

Opening Reception: Wednesday, November 11 from 5:30-7:30 PM

The Strand Center for the Arts is producing an exhibition dedicated to local Veterans and their families. The exhibition, entitled “The Veterans Project,” will feature drawings, painted portraits and photographic images of returning, returned, and still engaged Veterans. The opening reception of “The Veterans Project” will take place on Veterans Day, Wednesday November 11, 2015 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the Strand Center Main Gallery. The opening reception will be paired with a film screening of “On Home Ground,” a documentary by Mountain Lake PBS, at 7:30 pm in the Strand Center Theatre.

Wayne Handley

Opening Reception: Friday, November 13 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM
Show on View: November 13 to December 4, 2015

Handley was educated at Michigan State University and Eastern Michigan University where he received a BFA in Fine Art and in Education.  He then had the opportunity to live abroad for many years; working as an English Teacher and a Graphic Designer. Handley has had numerous solo shows in the region, including locations such as the Bibliothèque Claude-Henri-Grignon in Longueuil, QC, ROTA Art Gallery in Plattsburgh, NY, Ici Par Les Arts in St. Jerome, Quebec, and the Rothwell Gallery in Ottawa, Ontario. He has also won awards for his work in children’s literature.

“On the Road” Annual Regional Juried Show

The Strand Center for the Arts annually hosts a juried show open to artists of all ages and mediums. This year, the theme of the show was “On the Road” and participants were encouraged to submit artwork that addresses the themes of travel and adventure, whether it is in the region or abroad. “On the Road,” was on view in the Strand Center Community Gallery at 23 Brinkerhoff Street in Plattsburgh from October 9th to October 31st, 2015. The Opening Reception and Award Ceremony will take place Friday, October 9th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM and is free and open to the public.

“25” an exhibit featuring Amy & Judy Guglielmo

Artists Reception: Saturday, October 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM

Mother and daughter pair, Judy and Amy Guglielmo, celebrated 25 years of their artistic collaborations with a show at the Strand Center for the Arts. The exhibit, titled “25,” was on view in the Strand Center Main Gallery at 23 Brinkerhoff Street in Plattsburgh from October 9 to November 6, 2015. The Artist Reception took place Saturday, October 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM and is free and open to the public.

“The Escape” by Damian Battinelli in the Community Gallery

Exhibited in the Strand Center Community Gallery in September, 2015 was Damian Battinelli’s documentary photography series “The Escape,” which examines the community members, significant locations, and media presence surrounding the 2015 prison break in Dannemora, New York. This controversial event has not only affected the local community, but captured the attention of the entire nation. “The Escape,” was on view at the Strand Center from September 4th to October 2nd, 2015. The Opening Reception took place Friday, September 4th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and was free and open to the public.

Kimberly Berg & Christian Rodriguez in the Main Gallery

Artists Kimberly Berg and Christian Rodriguez were featured in the Main Gallery September, 2015.  Kimberly Berg has been creating artwork for the last 30 years, developing images that depict the female figure in both a physical and spiritual manner. Complimenting Berg’s pastel drawings is Christian Rodriguez’s sculptural bead work, which is also on view during the exhibition. Often incorporating large gemstones into a labyrinth of beaded strands, Rodriguez’s jewelry echoes the forms of nature. The exhibition was on view in the Strand Center at 23 Brinkerhoff Street in Plattsburgh from September 4th to October 2nd, 2015. Kimberly Berg hosted an Artist Talk at 4:00 PM on Friday, September 4th in the Main Gallery before the Opening Reception, which took place from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.

Louise Pattinelli, Jackie Sabourin and Lora VanNoord

Two new exhibitions will be opened in August on Friday, August 7, 2015. The headlining show in the Main Gallery featured abstract paintings by artist Louise Patinelli and new ceramic pieces by sculptor Jackie Sabourin. The Community Gallery also featured a separate show, new paintings by Lora VanNoord. Both exhibitions were on view in the Strand Center at 23 Brinkerhoff Street in Plattsburgh from August 7-28, 2015. The Opening Reception for both shows was  Friday, August 7th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and was free and open to the public.

Mayor’s Cup Artist Market 2015

The Artist Market is a producer-only event, meaning that the artists have made everything they sell. This includes, but is not limited to, jewelry, photography, metal work, rustic furniture, quilts, handmade stationary, paintings, pottery, and jams & jellies. Vendors this year include, Robert Wolf, Yvona Fast, Karen Parker – Island Wizard Designs, Jeremy Elsaib- Flatware Creations, Kristin Garrow, Tys Sweeney- Rubriataki Fused Glass Jewelry, Beverly Gonyo, Carol Laughlin – Carol’s Creations, Ryan Blaise Illustration, Aquarelle Artists, Nikki Benatovich -Cosmic Lotus Jewelry, Jane Galletti, Bobby Ziemba – North Star Studios, Danielle LaGoy, Nancy Armitage, and Scott Reinmann.

Summer Members Show 2015

The Strand Center for the Arts is proud to announce that its annual Summer Members Show was on view in the Main Gallery at 23 Brinkerhoff Street from July 3rd to July 31st, 2015. The Summer Members Opening Reception took place Friday July 3rd from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and was open to the public.

Yearly, the Strand Center welcomes works from its members for the Summer Members Show. This collaborative exhibition features a breadth of work including photography, sculpture, painting, pastels, ceramics, stained glass, printmaking and drawing. The exhibition will also feature a special selection of Andrea Knight’s work to commemorate past artist members.

“Duet” by Carol and Frank Hochreiter

 “Duet,”  featuring work by Carol and Frank Hochreiter was the exhibit on view during June, 2015. The exhibit ran from June 5 through June 27, 2015 at the Strand Center for the Arts, located at 23 Brinkerhoff Street, Plattsburgh. The opening reception was held June 5th from 5:00 to 8:00 pm and was part of the First Weekends in Plattsburgh Art Walk. 

Museum Days @ The Strand Center 2015

The public was invited to stop by the Strand Center for the Arts and check out what we have to offer on Museum Days, Saturday and Sunday June 6 & 7, 2015! The June Coloring Contest was on view as well as the “Duet” Exhibition by Carol and Frank Hochreiter. There was also a kid’s craft station, sidewalk chalk, and tours of the building.

Clairvoyance II: Art of the Visually Impaired

The Strand Center for the Arts is proud to host “Clairvoyance II: Artwork of the Visually Impaired,” a collaborative show featuring artwork by members of the Northeastern Association of the Blind at Albany Blind Artist Society (NABA BAS), Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI) and the North Country Association for the Visually Impaired, Inc. (NCAVI). The goal of this show is to proudly exhibit this extraordinary body of work and raise awareness in the arts that visual impairment can never stifle artistic creativity.

Annual High School & Middle School Show

Annual High School & Middle School Exhibition was  in the SCA Main Gallery at 23 Brinkerhoff Street in Plattsburgh. The opening reception for this exhibition will be held March 20th, 2015 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibition was on view in the Main Gallery from March 20th through April 24th, 2015. This year the High School & Middle School Exhibition featured an added incentive for students. Artwork placing first and second in each of the media categories was featured in a satellite exhibition at the Champlain Centre Mall in Plattsburgh. This satellite exhibit was on view at the Champlain Centre Friday, April 10th from 5:00 to 9:00 pm and Saturday, April 11th from 9:30 am to 9:00 pm.

“Poole & Shrope” and “Through My Eyes”

The first show of the New Year at the Strand Gallery featured work by Larry Poole, Peter Shrope, and Denise Duprey. Larry Poole and Peter Shrope had a collaborative show in the Main Gallery while Denise Duprey exhibited “Through My Eyes” in the Community Gallery. Saranac Lake artist Larry Poole works in the area of non-toxic intaglio printmaking. Poole’s work has been in more than 30 local and regional juried art exhibitions and has several won awards. Peter Shrope is a local artist, sculptor and designer. His experimentation using crushed Adirondack rock dust as glaze ingredients led him to develop the original formulas he uses in his current work that he calls “Adirondack Rockware.” Denise Duprey’s exhibit “Through My Eyes” focused on panoramic images of the city and lake fitted into up-cycled storm windows. Both shows were on view from January 9th to February 6th, 2015. The opening reception for these exhibitions was held January 9th, 2015 from 5:30 to 7:30.

The 2014 Holiday Members Show

The Strand Center for the Arts’ annual Holiday Members Show was on view in the Main Gallery at 23 Brinkerhoff Street from December 5th, 2014 to January 2nd, 2015. The Holiday Members Opening Reception took place Friday December 5th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.

The 2014 Regional Juried Show and The SCA Portrait Drawing Group Show

The Strand Center for the Arts was proud to host the exhibition “Portraits,” a fine art show featuring the works of various artists in the SCA Portrait Drawing Open Studio Group in the Main Gallery from November 7th to the 29th, 2014. The SCA Portrait Group is a fun, motivated and eclectic group of artists with a wide range of experience. They have been meeting at the Strand Center the past 5 years for a class focused on drawing portraits from a live model in a comfortable, casual setting.

“Leifheit & Lobdell”

Diane Leifheit is a North Country resident who works primarily out of Paul Smiths and Saranac Lake and a twelve year  [L&L web rotator] member of the Adirondack Artists Guild. Leifheit’s use of pastel creates subtle manipulations of color that generate depth and variety in her work. Leifheit states, “The box of used pastels I received as a very young artist was the beginning of my long love affair with color. Those early memories are nearly as dusty as the work I make on paper of the Adirondack people and its landscape.” Leifheit’s latest works include plein air paintings and a new series featuring portraits of local people.

Adirondack Coast ARTWays 2014 : Battle of Plattsburgh

The Strand Center for the Arts and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau are excited to announce this year’s Adirondack Coast ARTWays competition. The theme of this year’s Adirondack Coast ARTWays is the Battle of Plattsburgh Bicentennial. Two hundred years have passed since military forces battled for colonial rights off the coast of Plattsburgh and throughout the region. To commemorate these events the 2014 theme of ARTWays is honoring this rich history by inviting artists to reinterpret these events through creative expression.

The Strand Center for the Arts Drawing Group

The Strand Center for the Arts September 2014 exhibit featured works by the Strand Center for the Arts Drawing Group, which were on display in the Main Gallery from September 6th to the 27th, 2014. The opening event featured a live drawing class where guests were encouraged to participate and raffles were held throughout the night, for framed artwork. The opening reception was held Saturday, September 6th from 5:00-7:30 pm.

Gail & Clay Morris

The Strand Center for the Arts’ August 2014 exhibit  featured works by Gail and Clay Morris on display in our Main Gallery from August 1st to the 23rd, 2014. The combination of Gail’s plein air painting with the photographic work of her husband Clay, prod [Gail Morris 2] uces a complement in landscapes, emphasizing color and space. The opening reception was held August 1st from 5:30-7:00 pm and coincided with the First Weekends in Plattsburgh August Art Walk.

Clairvoyance : Works by NCAVI members and the NABA BAS

The Strand Center for the Arts is proud to host “Clairvoyance,” a collaborative show featuring the works by members of the North Country Association for the Visually Impaired, Inc. (NCAVI) and the Northeastern Association of the Blind at Albany Blind Artist Society (NABA BAS).  Clients from NCAVI participated in a workshop hosted by the Strand Center and taught by artist Amy Guglielmo. These pieces are displayed along with works by members of the NABA BAS. The goal of this show is to proudly exhibit this extraordinary body of work and raise awareness in the arts that visual impairment can never stifle artistic creativity.

2014 Summer Members Show

The Strand Center for the Arts is proud to announce its annual Summer Members Show on view in the Main Gallery at 23 Brinkerhoff Street from June 20th to July 26th, 2014. The Summer Members Opening Reception will take place Friday June 20th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM and is open to the public.

“Impromtu” Works by Lynn Manning and Erik Wilson

The Strand Center for the Arts is proud to announce the upcoming exhibition, “Impromptu,” which features works by Lynn Manning and Erik Wilson on display in our Main Gallery from May 9th to June 14th, 2014. Pairing the photographic work of Manning and the painting and sculpture of Wilson, the show generates a dreamlike atmosphere of sublime landscapes and earthy pottery. The reception will be held May 16th from 5:30-7:00 pm.

Tom Semeraro

Originally from Albany,  Tom Semeraro has been working within the field of fine arts for over two decades. His family immigrated in 1970 from the culturally rich area of southern Italy to Albany where he was born. Semeraro has completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in photography from New York State University at Albany and an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Business Administration from Hudson Valley Community College. Recently he has made a bold move to again pursue his creative visual art, promoting his mixed media, acrylic, and oil paint pieces.

Annual High and Middle School Show 2014

Students from local schools participated in the 2013 High & Middle School Show! Awards were given out to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in each category: Drawing, Painting, 2-D Mixed Media, Sculpture, Ceramics, Photography, and Printmaking. There was also a Best in Show, Best in Middle School, Jurors Pick, two Honorable mentions and two Staff Picks. Everyone was incredibly impressed by the quality and variety of work being produced by local students.

THREADS: Art Quilt Exhibition

The “Threads” exhibition, which will displayed over a dozen fiber art quilts a dozen fiber artists from across the Adirondacks and Vermont.

The community got involved by voting for their favorite art quilt. Awards were distributed including juror’s pick, staff pick, and community choice (determined by community voting)! Anne Standish’s “”Smuggler’s Notch” won both Juror’s pick and “Community Choice”. Lisa Loitta’s “Untitled” won “Staff Pick”.

Abstract: Tevye Scherline and Tom Nicholas

This bold show helped welcome in Spring with its bright colors and natural wood textures. Both artists exhibited their abstract paintings and Tom featured some of his delicate, handmade furniture. Tevye uses collage, latex and other mediums in his paintings that help give his work unique textures. While Tom’s focused more with shapes and color, with works over 6 ft wide in shades of tangerine and lime.

High & Middle School Exhibition 2013

Ninety-six students from local schools participated in the 2013 High & Middle School Show! Awards were given out to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in each category: Drawing, Painting, 2-D Mixed Media, Sculpture, Ceramics, Photography, and Printmaking. There was also a Best in Show, Best in Middle School, Jurors Pick, two Honorable mentions and two Staff Picks. Everyone was incredibly impressed by the quality and variety of work being produced by local students. The most memorable pieces include a larger than life pair of sunglasses and a gown made completely from magazines!

Encore: Senior Show

Sixteen senior artists got together and decided to exhibit together at the Arts Center. The group artists ranged from fresh beginners to experienced professionals. With most works primarily watercolor mediums, the show was bright, colorful and overall a very upbeat show! Subject matter included birds, flowers, zebra, rhinos, skiers, moose, tigers, sailboats, and “Lazy Seals”...

2012-2013 Holiday Member Show

Over 37 local artists participated in the 2012-2013 Holiday Member Show, bringing in a total of 94 works. As always there was a wide variety of mediums: acrylic, oil, charcoal, pencil, fiber art, collage, photography, ceramics, stained glasses, beading, pastels, and woodworking. This show was also the first public unveiling of the Main Gallery’s new floor! The new laminate floor is replacing old carpet from when the building used to be a post office. The new floor funds were raised in the annual Arms, Legs, Art and Antiques Auction in the fall of 2012 and the instillation was done at cost by Lee’s Appliances in Plattsburgh. Lee’s Appliances also donated new molding to replace the previously damaged pieces.  The Arts Center would like to give a big Thank You to everyone who helped make the new floor a reality!

Pat Duniho & The North Country Potter’s Guild

In November 2012, the NCCCA presented photographer, Pat Duniho and The North Country Potter’s Guild in its Main Gallery. The exhibition combined local photography and ceramics for a diverse show that explored nature, shape, form and color.
