The Strand Center for the Arts will be featuring artists Kimberly Berg and Christian Rodriguez in the Main Gallery this September.  The exhibition will be on view in the Strand Center at 23 Brinkerhoff Street in Plattsburgh from September 4th to October 2nd, 2015. Kimberly Berg will host an Artist Talk at 4:00 PM on Friday, September 4th in the Main Gallery before the Opening Reception, which will take place from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.

Kimberly Berg has been creating artwork for the last 30 years, developing images that depict the female figure in both a physical and spiritual manner. He began these figure drawing studies in the early 1990’s and felt that the subject matter gave him the chance to create art that the viewer could relate to on a more personal level. Berg’s connection to feminist movements has also influenced his style. Using imagery to counter the effects of patriarchy, he attempts to break down the stereotypical roles prescribed by society and foster a more valid idea of identity. Berg stated that “I firmly believe that for the women’s movement to be effective it must include the active participation of men.”

Complimenting Berg’s pastel drawings is Christian Rodriguez’s sculptural bead work, which is also on view during the exhibition. Often incorporating large gemstones into a labyrinth of beaded strands, Rodriguez’s jewelry echoes the forms of nature. Streams, boulders, shells, figures and flora can be read in the interlaced network of beads. Rodriguez stated, “I hope that those who view my work begin to see bead embroidery not just as mere jewelry but as sculptural art encompassed in the form of adornments.”

“It was an easy decision to pair these two artists together,” stated Strand Center Gallery Coordinator, Christina Elliott. “An organic sense of shape and flow dictate both artists’ compositions. They both work to uplift women as well; Kim creates images of women empowered while Christian creates a sense of empowerment that can be worn.”

The Main Gallery exhibit in September at the Strand Center for the Arts will feature drawings by artist Kimberly Berg and sculptural pieces by jeweler Christian Rodriguez. Both exhibitions in the Main and Community Galleries will be on view in the Strand Center at 23 Brinkerhoff Street in Plattsburgh from September 4th to October 2nd, 2015. The Opening Reception for both shows will take place Friday, September 4th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Kimberly Berg’s Artist Talk will precede the opening at 4:00 PM and is free and open to the public.

Gallery Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. For more information on these exhibits, upcoming events, concerts or classes happening at the Strand Center for the Arts, please call 518-563-1604 or visit www.plattsburgharts.org.
