Worthwhile Opportunities through Resources & Knowledge

About ART/WORK

ART/WORK: Worthwhile Opportunities through Resources & Knowledge is a new 12 session visual arts program for youth in grades PreK-8th in Clinton County. The program is free to the students.

Art experiences will include drawing, painting, sculpture, clay, fiber art, digital art, and collage. Students will be working with professional Teaching Artists that are established in their field and can serve in a mentor role and source of inspiration to the participating students.

The four goals of ART/WORK: Worthwhile Opportunities through Resources & Knowledge are to:

• Empower youth to express their vision and voice through visual arts.

• Enable youth to build life skills such as self-confidence, perseverance, and problem-solving.

• Encourage youth to connect with the community in Plattsburgh, NY and beyond within Clinton County.

• Establish mentoring relationships with youth.

In addition to visual art experiences, creating artwork, students will also have the opportunity to:

• Display their artwork to the community.

• Learn how to speak about their artwork and inspirations, and feel confident doing so.

• Meet professional artists in the community.

•Meet their peers from other schools outside their district/homeschool experience.

Giving youth a voice!
We view our students as co-producers in ART/WORK. We want students to help guide the activities so they feel they have a voice. We also encourage the older students to become mentors to our younger students giving them more of a sense of responsibility.

FAQs

  • Art Club is our youth afterschool program we have been running since 2022! Art Club is a studio class where our students spend 12 weeks creating artwork culminating in a showcase for their family and friends.

ART/WORK, launched in 2024, is an opportunity for youth to dive deeper into their interest in art by learning how to speak about their artwork and inspirations, and feel confident doing so while also meeting professional artists in the community.

  • As much as we would like to include every interested student, there are limited spots available and we want to ensure that all selected students are committed to the objectives of ART/WORK and represent a diverse and vibrant cohort of young artists.

For example: if your student is only interested in creating art and not interested in learning how to talk about their work and exhibiting their work, ART/WORK is not the right fit for them.

  • If your student is not selected for a cohort of ART/WORK, we still have a variety of youth art classes (& a scholarship program) here at the Strand! Please view our upcoming classes >>
