Organic Matter Opening Reception

  • The Strand Center for the Arts 23 Brinkerhoff St Plattsburgh, NY, 12901 United States (map)

Please join us on Friday, June 12th from 5-8pm for the opening reception of Organic Matter! This exhibition will be compiled of artwork from a select group of 6 individuals chosen by the curator, Elsa Koop-Angelicola, to display the raw beauty of abstract elements taken to move and present as something far greater than what the eye initially sees.

”As human beings, we are innately organic and connected to nature, the earth, and everything in between. Everything in this sense can be considered organic, alive, and a part of the human experience. It is certainly not uncommon for artists to take these organic elements that are found in nature and everyday life, including in our own lives, and turn it into something spectacular. As organic beings, it almost seems innate for humans to be enamored and inspired by the organic parts of nature and life around us.

This show will explore the way artists use color, medium, texture, and their own personal experiences to create something life-like, something nothing short of organic, but in their own remarkable way. Oftentimes the things we see on the surface go far deeper than we can imagine, and this show plays on the connection between ourselves, the mind, and the natural world. From the deepest parts of the human psyche to the many layers of the natural world all around us, this exhibition invites you to explore these connections and appreciate the contrasting elements of being an organic being. Another point of this exhibition is to bring attention to our correlation with the happenings and changes to our planet earth, as it is ever altering under our human influence and invasion. With the quickly advancing technology that has begun to cast a looming shadow over the traditional arts, this exhibition also means to make a statement on the power of traditional art and the extortionary skills of the artists.”  - Elsa Koop-Angelicola

Participating Artists: Ali Della Bitta (sculpture), Wylie Garcia (painting), Susan Granfors (fiber arts), Sienna Martz (fiber arts/sculpture), Peter Russom (abstract painting), and Dennis Smyth (woodworking).
