Deviations Opening Reception

Join us on February 13th for the opening reception of Deviations, a solo exhibition featuring the works of artist, James Antonson.

James is a multidisciplinary artist that currently resides in Brooklyn, NY where he teaches K-5 art with a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, clay, mixed media, collage and sound art. James has a background in carpentry, interior painting, and other freelance work that has aided him in his own artistic career. James mainly works within the realm of painting but also practices in collage, drawing, photography, and other experimental works where he continues to practice independently and in freelance work.

James received his B.S. in Art education from Kutztown University, Pennsylvania and his M.A. in Art Education from Brooklyn College, New York.

“For me, art is as vital as breath, a type of survival quality control. I come to the canvas with no preconceptions, seeking an experiment, undertaken to find something new or unforeseen. At times I find this process disastrous, like the beginner unable to find clarity, seeking a way out, only to destroy the image and begin again. This series focuses on trees, waters, and mountains, being inspired by frequent trips to forested areas and hiking.”

- James Antonson

This exhibition opening is FREE and open to the public! Hope to see you here!

The Arts in Plattsburgh: Past and Present Opening Reception

The Arts in Plattsburgh: Past and Present Opening Reception

The Arts in Plattsburgh: Past and Present is the artist’s (Roscoe Duquette) love letter to the artistic talent found in his hometown. This exhibition highlights local theatre productions and the impressive collection of portraiture found at the Kent-Delord House Museum through the mediums of painting and drawing. Roscoe hopes his work will encourage viewers’ active participation within Plattsburgh’s growing arts scene!”

”My vision for this project is to produce a body of works that are united by the celebration and appreciation of the arts in Plattsburgh that also share a visual language. Stylistically, my work heavily relies on the use of arbitrary color, expressive mark making, and warping the space to capture the feeling of the subject matter rather than just a likeness of it. My work showcases a variety of expressive techniques like use of impasto, allowing media to drip down the composition, and even warping ink drawings with isopropyl alcohol. Beyond the obvious primary theme of the arts in Plattsburgh, an underlying theme of diversity is present in both the variety of artworks and artists celebrated. I would like to further draw on this secondary theme by focusing on depicting fellow LGBT+ individuals in the portraiture section of the project. There is a long history of artworks that draw on other works for inspiration. In fact, some of the most celebrated and studied works are in direct conversation with other artwork. By building on this tradition with the arts within Plattsburgh as the basis, I will build a space for my hometown in the art history canon. By doing so I hope to not only shine a spotlight onto the massive amount of skill and talent from the area, but to also encourage other artists to engage with Plattsburgh’s arts scene in a similar manner.”

- Roscoe Duquette, Artist

This exhibition will be on display from Oct. 10th - Nov. 1st and is FREE ton the public.

Primary Source Opening Reception
Sep

Primary Source Opening Reception

Please join us on Friday, September 5th at 5pm for the opening of Primary Source, a solo exhibition featuring the works of Fiber Artist, Patricia Downs.

Patricia creates sculptural forms and art objects using primarily repurposed fibers. With her process and practice rooted in traditions that have been passed down from many generations, she uses a mix of traditional fiber art techniques, such as crocheting, floor loom weaving, frame weaving, knot-tying, basket weaving, beading, and sewing while interrogating the historical and contemporary notions of what defines “fine art” vs. “craft” objects.

“In my work, I deal with loaded concepts surrounding gender and femininity; the nature of living inside a human bodily form; and the links between one’s emotional, mental, and physical health. My work reflects my experiences in the body of a queer woman in contemporary American culture and society, and though my experiences are filtered through a present-day lens, my work is in conversation with the work of every queer woman artist and maker that came before me.

My work unapologetically takes up physical space, claiming space for myself, for queer and non-cis-male artists, and for the traditions of fiber arts and “craft” objects in venues like fine art galleries.”

- Patricia Downs, Artist

This project is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Fiber Arts Group

Attention local Fiber Artists:

We invite you to join us at the Strand on the 2nd Wednesdays of the month from 2 to 5pm. Come for the entire time or to drop in to see what we are doing!

This group will consist of makers who create in fiber (yarn, fabric, thread, spinning fibers, cane, etc, etc, etc) and strive to be not just makers but more. By sharing what they are creating, they can learn so much from each other and be inspired to try new things. Weavers may knit into their handwoven fabrics,  quilters might stitch into their quilted pieces, knitters might add hands-spun fibers into their hand knitted items, spinners can explore different fibers to knit or weave… there are so many possibilities of ways weaving might cross pollinate. Artists can learn to use patterns by viewing them as starting points and explore how to make them our own. By thinking “outside the box” fiber artists can create something special, something unique, something no one else has ever made in the same way.

Each session will start with introductions and then move into sharing what the fiber artists have made either recently or in the past - a show and tell - that might last 30 seconds or 5 minutes. This type of informal setting can harbor a safe space for learning from each other and nurture creative souls. The group encourages you to bring what you’re are working on and eventually break into small interest groups as time allows to further discuss the works.

Looking forward to meeting you and starting something exciting for our Fiber Art Community. Please contact Suzanne Hokanson if you are interested in joining us and if you would like more information. SWHFiberWorks@gmail.com

The World is Her Canvas

The World is Her Canvas

Join us on April 18th from 5-8pm for the opening reception of The World is Her Canvas, an exhibition dedicated to the limitless talents of women in the arts. For hundreds of years, women have often been overlooked in the artworld, as it has been and still is primarily dominated by men. This show dedicates how far women have come in the arts, as well as in the world.

With a diverse array of painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, multi-media and fiber arts, the artists in this exhibition exemplify the talents of women artists of various backgrounds and ages while demonstrating the different paths artists take and their reasons for creating the work they do.

Participating artists: Sarah Ashe, Alise Babbie, Zoe Bedell, Kt Falzetta (Dear Simon Photography), Valerie Hird, Susan Hoffer, Eve Petrashune, and Michelle Vara.

Join us for the FREE opening reception from 5-8pm on Friday, April 18th!

This exhibition will be open to the public during our regular business hours from April 18th - June 21st.
