Please join us on Friday, September 5th at 5pm for the opening of Primary Source, a solo exhibition featuring the works of Fiber Artist, Patricia Downs.
Patricia creates sculptural forms and art objects using primarily repurposed fibers. With her process and practice rooted in traditions that have been passed down from many generations, she uses a mix of traditional fiber art techniques, such as crocheting, floor loom weaving, frame weaving, knot-tying, basket weaving, beading, and sewing while interrogating the historical and contemporary notions of what defines “fine art” vs. “craft” objects.
“In my work, I deal with loaded concepts surrounding gender and femininity; the nature of living inside a human bodily form; and the links between one’s emotional, mental, and physical health. My work reflects my experiences in the body of a queer woman in contemporary American culture and society, and though my experiences are filtered through a present-day lens, my work is in conversation with the work of every queer woman artist and maker that came before me.
My work unapologetically takes up physical space, claiming space for myself, for queer and non-cis-male artists, and for the traditions of fiber arts and “craft” objects in venues like fine art galleries.”
