Portrait of a Community Opening Reception

  • The Strand Center for the Arts 23 Brinkerhoff St Plattsburgh, NY, 12901 United States (map)

Please join us on Friday, Sept. 11th from 5-8pm for the opening reception of Portrait of a Community, a group exhibition featuring the works of five portrait artists with five different perspectives to share their appreciation for their community through portraits.

Each artist works in a different medium; Shaun O’Connell - colored pencil, Naomi Bradshaw - charcoal, Kaitlyn Jubert - graphite, Cynthia Root - watercolor/acrylic, and June Levenson - oil.

“We are a group of five portrait artists who have been working together for the past several years. We sit together with our subjects, and then complete the works on our own, using photographs taken during the shared session. The subjects are people in the local community. Each portrait shines as a unique yet integral part of this place we call home. It has been a fascinating endeavor to see each community member portrayed from a different vantage point, and in a totally different style and medium.”

To begin each piece, the artists asked people they knew to sit for them, as well as some people they didn’t know. Community members were incredibly open and generous with their time, and the artists learned a lot about the talent and diversity all around us. Photos were taken during these sessions to keep working from to complete the pieces. Some of these portraits took months to complete.

Three years later, the result is Portrait of a Community.

This exhibition will be on display until Saturday, Oct. 24th.
